Alana Surowiec

The Johns Hopkins University
US Admissions Consultant and Instructor

Alana attended The Johns Hopkins University graduating with a triple major in History, Archaeology, and Italian Studies with a minor in Museums and Society. Her degree was awarded General Honors and Departmental Honors in History after completing her Senior Thesis Paper Washerwomen, Laundresses, and the Production of Cleanliness in Early Modern London. Her education included a study abroad semester with a concentration in the Italian Language from the organization IES in Rome, Italy, and a summer research position at the Institute for Field Research at The Azoria Project in Crete, Greece. She has since completed a TEFL certification.

Alana began mentoring students on an archaeological dig in upstate New York. Her first teaching experience occurred at the Johns Hopkins Writing Center where she assisted students with their class essays, research projects, and personal statements for various types of graduate school. Her extra-curricular activities included a board position at one of the oldest Model United Nations conferences in the USA, in which she trained students and staff on parliamentary procedure. After graduating, she taught students archaeological excavation techniques and research methodologies at a dig in Illinois. Shortly after she moved to Hong Kong, she taught lessons in international politics, critical writing, and debate as well as conducted mock interviews and college essay preparation private sessions.

Outside of the classroom, Alana is a student herself. An avid language learner she has studied Spanish, Italian, Putonghua, and Cantonese with a mix of other languages on her to do list. Her favorite activities include: baking deserts, hiking to maintain her fitness, and learning to roller-skate after being a competitive ice skater for many years.
