Alastor M. Coleby

Alastor has a PhD in Construction from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, focused on community relations within environmental impact assessment followed by two postdocs on sustainable development and planning policy. He also has a Masters in Geography on Regional Resources Planning, from the University of Aberdeen, and an Honours degree in Environmental Geoscience from the University of London (UCL) specialised in coastal landforms. Alastor’s teaching has been recognised with a Teaching Fellowship from the U.K. Higher Education Academy.

Alastor is a motivated and enthusiastic environmental geographer with a background in sustainable development and social responses to changing spaces in Europe and in Hong Kong; His scientific background and work experience consisting of twenty years of research and teaching in Britain and in China; His research specialised in environmental management and impact assessment, marine spatial planning, and public participation in conservation; Alastor is an experienced writer for public and commercial consultation on natural resources management, most recently on marine plastics in Hong Kong. Since coming to the city seven years ago he has worked as an international and private school geography teacher across in IB, IAL, and HK DSE in some of Hong Kong’s most famous schools.

Alastor has long held a fascination with East Asian culture and history and reads extensively on Anglo-Chinese History with a particular interest in the story of Hong Kong and Shanghai. He also enjoys discussing science and political philosophy. When not doing these things, he enjoys socialising with colleagues and meeting new people. Other interests have included ecology, urban exploration, photography and fine art, and at one time Chinese martial arts.
