Wesley Richardson

Wesley graduated from Colorado College with a double major in Psychology and Political Science. After graduating, he attended the University of Minnesota Law School for a year. While in law school, he began teaching LSAT and SAT preparation courses, and realized that he enjoyed teaching much more than doing the kinds of reading and writing required of a lawyer.

He began teaching for one of the US’s largest test-preparation companies and was quickly promoted to be an elite tutor and teacher trainer. He taught and trained teachers for many US admissions tests, including SAT, ACT, SSAT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. In 2009, he moved on to the company’s Hong Kong branch as their head teacher and trainer. He has successfully helped students gain admission to top US undergraduate and graduate programs, including universities such as MIT and the University of Chicago.

In Hong Kong, Wesley has diversified his teaching experience. Working for a local tutoring company he, continued to teach and develop curricula for US test prep, but also gained experience with IB and GCSE history. He has guided many students in their writing and gaining top marks on IB essays including the TOK and EE.  For the past five years, Wesley has worked at a local DSS secondary school, teaching English language and history. He has gained experience with the HKDSE syllabus for those two subjects, while teaching Forms 1 to 6 in a multi-cultural Hong Kong secondary school. To provide students with enhanced learning opportunities, Wesley developed and taught elective modules on Gothic Poetry, Science Fiction, Legal English, and the novels Animal Farm, 1984, and The White Tiger.

As a language teacher, Wesley believes that students need first and foremost to be exposed to high-quality, authentic and comprehensible language input. From that input, lessons on grammatical structures and vocabulary can be crafted to meet students’ needs. Students then can be guided through stages of practice, eventually culminating in a free writing or speaking task.

As a test-prep teacher, Wesley believes that learning the content of exams is only half of what students need for success. As students are mastering the content, it is important that they develop habits that will help them succeed on test day. Standardized tests are performance events; students will get anxious, stressed, and tired. When that happens, they will fall back on their habits. Because of this, Wesley believes in changing bad habits early, and helping students develop systematic test-taking habits they can use on test day.

As a history teacher, Wesley uses the narrative nature of historical events to engage students’ interest. Humans are natural constructors and consumers of narrative, and Wesley uses this to make learning history fun. Then he encourages critical thinking and questioning of these narratives. Students are asked to look at events from multiple perspectives, and question historical sources in terms of the accuracy and potential bias in their reporting. This approach has been particularly helpful for IB history students, as rigorous source analysis is critical to getting top marks.
