Wesley Tucker

University of Massachusetts
Chemistry and Biology Instructor

Wesley received his Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry) at the University of Massachusetts, Boston campus (USA).  After moving to California for a few years to work in biotechnology, he decided to move to Hong Kong for his PhD in the interest of having an experience living abroad. Five years later he finished his PhD (Biochemistry) at Hong Kong University (Faculty of Medicine), which at the time was near the top of international university rankings.  While many researchers go on to do post-doctoral fellowships after their PhD, Wesley instead went on to work in industry as a consultant.

Wesley’s experience with teaching started during his PhD when he would travel around Hong Kong giving private lessons as an extra part-time job.  For a period after this, he worked as a science consultant in the shipping industry, where he gained skills in presentation giving and explanations of technical issues at meetings.  After a short time back in research, he entered a formal teaching role where he taught mostly A-levels, IGCSE and IB Chemistry and Biology.  He has also taught 13+ level general science and worked with students who were exclusively completing science projects for their school.  During his time teaching, he gained a better appreciation for the needs of individual students, who are highly variable in their goals and ways of learning.  He is also perpetually working on his drawing skills and building his collection of teaching materials.  Wesley understands that there is always just the right question, explanation, or image for just the right student, at just the right time.  Finally, he is always working on his pacing, which he finds especially important since going to fast will overwhelm some students while going too slow will frustrate others.  The ways and means of teaching are infinite within every subject, so the incremental betterment of the lessons will always motivate him, and he looks forward to growing together in these ways with every student he works with.

At ARCH, Wesley will be guiding students studying Biology and Chemistry and assisting their preparation for UK, US and international exams. His extensive research experience will also benefit students who are attempting the EPQ and Extended Essay.

In his free time, Wesley enjoys time with his family, exercise, films, and science related disciplines such as pharmacology. It is a goal of his to at some point attend the Cannes, Venice, or Taranto film festivals.  Hong Kong’s arthouse theatre (Cinematheque) is his home away from home and he hopes it can survive post COVID, as he feels strongly that theaters are the most immersive way to experience a film.
