Alexander Yu graduated from the University of Toronto, Canada, with a B.A. in English Literature.

Alexander has guided a number of students through the rigors of US test preparation and the hurdles of the IB program. With more than 8 years of teaching in Hong Kong, Alexander has adapted his teaching to accommodate for the changes in the SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, IELTS, and TOEFL. With the focus of most standardised tests turning towards “evidence-based” questions, Alexander’s focus on building critical reading skills is arguably the most underrated but also the most necessary to help any student score their highest score.

With regards to teaching the IB Curricula, Alexander has focused on the “global mindedness” that is becoming a more dominant focus for the IB Diploma. His main approach to learning (ATL) is developing critical thinking skills and speaking skills through socratic discussion. These qualities are more emphasized in his Theory of Knowledge lessons, but they can also be seen in all of his Language A: English and Language B: English lessons.

Within a similar framework of critical thinking, Alexander guides his students through the GMAT, LNAT, UKCAT, and BMAT. He also helps balance the critical philosophy of these tests by soundboarding creative ideas and novel perspectives when helping his students through personal statements for the Common Application (US application) and UCAS (UK application).

Through his experience teaching local students in the HKDSE, International students in IB, A-Levels, AP, as well as boarding students studying the OSSD, Alexander has seen almost every misinformed approach to learning, and has countered with productive lessons and learning strategies that have helped many students reach their top pick schools. 

Every student is different,  which means that experience and teaching ability are more and more important when mining for potential and shaping a student’s future. In this regard, Alexander’s 8+ years of teaching experience in Hong Kong is a valuable toolset for enhancing and pushing students in reaching their full-potentials. His experience from teaching students from almost every international school in Hong Kong gives him a better perspective on the respective needs and requirements for each student from his/her particular system of education.
