Emily Chen

Columbia University
US Admissions Consultant

Emily’s academic experiences have taken her to China, the U.K., and the US. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, she moved to China for high school, where she underwent the IGCSE examinations followed by the IB examinations. Upon graduation, she received an offer from University College London (UCL) to study English. Following her education at UCL and a growing interest in postwar fiction and Asian American studies, she moved to New York to complete her MA degree in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Her research intersected Cold War studies, literary psychoanalysis, and the Asian American war novel. Outside the classroom, she participated in outreach programs and worked with socioeconomically disadvantaged students. She also served as an editorial intern for Our National Conversation, a student-run multimedia news platform that aims to reduce partisanship within America’s political discourse.

Emily is experienced with mentoring high school students. In her senior year of her undergraduate studies, she volunteered for Brightside U.K., a nonprofit organization that connects academic mentors with underprivileged high school students. She worked with students with an interest in the humanities and assisted them in areas such as exploring university and scholarship options, finding extracurricular activities to strengthen their applications, and drafting and editing their application essays. Emily also has experience teaching IB English Language and Literature. During her Master’s program at Columbia University, she worked as a part-time English teacher for an international school based in Taiwan. She introduced her students to various genres of literary and non-literary texts and taught them how to analyze the unique aesthetic features of each type of text. Additionally, she introduced them to different forms of academic writing and helped them improve their analytical and rhetorical skills.

At ARCH, Emily serves as an Admissions Consultant on the US Consultant team. Using her own experiences as both an international student and an international teacher, she aims to help her students find universities that are most suitable for their academic and professional aspirations. And, employing the skills she gained from her formal training in English, she is dedicated to helping students craft their narratives in a compelling way that enables them to achieve admission to their dream universities.

As a self-proclaimed cosmopolite, Emily enjoys immersing herself in different cultures and participating in various cultural activities. These include reading novels, watching Indie films, visiting museums, and attending the theatre. She also loves wandering around the city and excavating hidden gems only known to the locals.
