Paul J. Tines

Johns Hopkins University
Arts Portfolio Admissions Consultant

Paul J. Tines has an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University, a Certificate of Advanced Studies from Wesleyan University, and a B.A from Pacific Western University. In addition, he has studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Royal Academy. He served as Assistant Head of School for Advancement and Dean of the Arts at The Marvelwood School in Connecticut, Dean of the Arts at the Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Executive Director of the Paul Mellon Arts Center and head of the Choate Rosemary Hall Arts Department, and Director of the Ward Center for the Arts at the St. Paul’s Schools in Baltimore. In addition, Paul was the Executive Director of Broadway Asia Entertainment, establishing musical theater academies in China and South Korea, and has created arts curricula for the Edison Project in New York City.

Paul has taught acting, dance, movement, and theater history for more than 40 years. He has directed and choreographed over 150 musicals and plays at the Paul Mellon Arts Center (Choate), Ward Center for the Arts (St. Paul’s Schools), Austin Arts Center (Trinity College), The Contemporary Arts Center and Newman Arts Center (NOLA), Newton Country Players, Lexington Players (Boston), and other regional theaters. His theater students have appeared on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in regional theaters.

As Executive Director of the Paul Mellon Arts Center at Choate, Paul created the school’s signature Arts Concentration Program and the Summer Arts Conservatory. The Arts Concentration Program allows students with exceptional talent in the visual or performing arts to develop their talents in the context of an arts conservatory atmosphere and a rich academic program. The Summer Arts Conservatory brought students from all over the world to develop their talents in playwriting, musical theater, classical theater, and the visual arts. More than 25 plays have been written and produced in the 15 years of the Conservatory, many published for productions across the country.

At ARCH, Paul provides Arts Portfolio consultation. Working with students, he helps them create a theater or dance portfolio for college. Paul tutors students on audition techniques and acting styles, physical and vocal techniques, and selection of audition material. He assists with selection of colleges/universities/conservatories with strong and appropriate arts programs and script analysis to better understand the audition material. He follows students throughout the college audition and interview process.
